Although our older girls do not know it, we've caught the little acts of kindness and love they've bestowed upon Eliana as of late. These glimpses of sweet sisterhood are such a gift. We've been lucky that Mia and Ava have adjusted well to our little intruder, but it's no secret that they are perfectly happy to keep their distance. Part of me worries that their "twin bond" is so strong that they won't make room for Eliana. I don't want her to grow-up feeling like an outsider. Others have assured me that this won't happen, but I'll worry just the same. Luckily, my fears are lessened every once and a while. When she cries, it warms my heart to hear the girls announce, "Elie's sad" or "Elie's hungry". Like all big sisters should, they're watching out for her. When she isn't in her car seat between them, they notice she's missing. Maybe this means they think she belongs. They've started referring to her as their "baby sister". She's no longer just "Elie" to them, she's more important. . . she's their sister. Here's the proof that we're making progress:
On a weekend walk to the playground, Ava was willing to share her side of the wagon with Eliana. When I reminded her to hold her sister's head, she did so dutifully.
Then, Mia reached across to help protect her little sister, too.
How lucky are we to witness these sweet moments of sisterhood?
