It's Mother's Day once again and that means its time for
me to bring some of my thoughts to the blog. This time around, I'd like
to share a bit about what life is like for the dad in a house full of
ladies.
After the alarm goes off and I jump into the shower, I get a little one-on-one time with Eliana as I bring her downstairs to start her day. The
older girls usually wake up around 6:30 in the morning (a big
improvement over the 5:00 am mornings we had for many months). I just can't
wipe the smile off my face when I hear the first calls of "Daddy" come
over the monitors. I'm lucky enough to be the first person they see
most mornings as I carry them down to have breakfast at the table with
me. Once it's time to head out to work, a chorus of "Bye, Daddy" sends
me on my way on the right foot.
One of the best developments in recent weeks has been the addition of
phone calls with my girls on the way home. Hearing them tell me they
love me and that they'll see me soon has me in tears during my commute. Once home, I get to give mom a bit of a break and play with all three
girls through the early evening. With Eliana smiling in my lap, Mia
calling out letter sounds and Ava insisting on wearing 2 hats, I quickly
forget whatever worries were still rattling around my head from the
work day.
Bedtime brings a story to read, a hunt for our favorite stuffed animals
and a few last minutes to spend with my girls as I tuck them in for the
night. While Mia sits quietly as I kiss her on the head, Ava has taken
to shouting "Love you!" as I make my way out of their room and back to
the living room to share some dessert with my wife and spend a few more
minutes with Eliana in my arms.
The phrases I hear when leaving the house with my gaggle around me
include "Oh, you're surrounded," "Poor you," " and "You going to try
again for a boy?" If they knew what my typical day was like, I'd surely hear "Congratulations" more often than seeing concerned faces. I'm the luckiest guy in the world and my wife deserves many thanks for bringing these little ladies into my life and for the incredible job she has done raising them.
Happy Mother's Day!
