Road Trip

Yesterday, Eliana and I dropped the older girls off at their Baba and Dida's house and then went on a little road trip.  We spent the afternoon in Toledo visiting the school where I used to teach.  This was my last opportunity to see my former students before they head off to middle school.  It is hard to believe my last class of second graders is that old already.  What's even crazier is that many of them are now as tall as me!  I was a little nervous that I wouldn't remember all the kids' names, but luckily each face was recognizable.  While a few former students keep in touch, it's not likely that I'll see many of them again.  I'm thankful for so many of the lessons my students and their families taught me and am glad I took the time to visit one last time.

It was great to spend time with some of the staff members, too.  Although we've kept up with each other on facebook, being in their presence is so much nicer.  I especially enjoyed seeing my closest colleague get some special recognition.  Mrs. Ely is one of the finalists for Imagine Schools' National Teacher of the Year.  To say that I felt lucky to be there last night as she was honored in front of parents, students and teachers is an understatement.  We spent three years teaching side-by-side and I will forever cherish what we went through together and the bond we formed.  She is a truly gifted teacher and deserves every bit of the recognition she is getting.  Good luck, Jess!!!!

I didn't have as much time to catch-up with my friends as I would have liked, so I'm hoping another visit is in our near future. Eliana was a great companion and slept peacefully for the entire ride home.
