Why didn't anyone tell me twins attract a lot of attention? Now that we're seven months in, I know what to expect when we go in public, but I definitely wasn't prepared at first. We've never made it through a store without the following conversation:
Are those twins? Yes
Boys or girls? Identical girls
How old are they? 7 months, but they're small for their age because they were preemies.
How early were they? 10 weeks
How much did they weigh? Just about 3 pounds each
How long were they in the hospital? We spent 52 days at Rainbows.
They look healthy. They are perfect, just a little small.
What are their names? This is Mia and that's Ava.
Can you tell them apart? Yes, they have slight differences.
You are so blessed. Yes, we are. Thank you.
I really don't mind stopping to chat with people. They are usually very sweet and supportive. However, there are times when people say or do things that just throw me off a bit. Here are some examples:
Too bad you didn't have one of each because then you could be done. Ummm, that's okay. We want more than two, anyway.
Look at the twins. Oh, they're sleeping. Not any more (I don't actually say that, but it's what I'm always thinking).
That one is bigger (referring to Mia). Actually, they're the same size. Her face just has more of a round shape, so she looks bigger. (I don't know why this one bothers me, but it just does).
Are you breastfeeding them? (If you read the previous post you know there is no quick or easy answer to this question so I won't even attempt to type how I usually respond).
Are they girls, boys, one of each? Do you not see the bright pink flower headbands they are wearing??? (Okay, I don't actually say that, either. Instead, I just politely inform the person that they're identical girls. This question only bugs me when their gender is quite obvious).
***My all time favorite***
Are they natural? Yes.
I was in the grocery store when this question was asked. The lady wasn't particularly friendly, which was part of the problem. She just came up to me and asked if both girls were mine. I said yes and that's when the question came. To be honest, the doctors aren't sure if the twins were a product of Clomid or a natural occurrence. We were told that there was a 10% chance of conceiving fraternal twins, but our girls are identical. This threw the doctors off a bit. I like that there is no way of knowing exactly what happened. Perhaps, I wasn't exactly truthful with the lady, but I wasn't about to get into my personal history in the middle of a cereal aisle.
I'm sure we will have many more occurrences like this and that's okay. The friendly conversations are much more frequent than the ones that make me slightly uncomfortable.
