That Kind of Day

I wanted to title this post damsel in distress, but according to wikepedia, I'm not a damsel.  Mom-stuck-on-the side-of-the-road just doesn't roll off the tongue like damsel in distress.  Anyway, the girls and I were on our way to pick up a vintage typewriter about 20 minutes from home, when I heard the kind of noise you definitely don't want your car to make.  I pulled off to the first safe place I could find and assessed the damage: a flat tire.  Thankfully, Mate answered his phone and was able to leave work a bit early to rescue me.  While I waited, it seemed like a good idea to do as much as I could without him.  Locate tools in the trunk: check. Remove spare tire from under the car: check.  Loosen nuts on tire: fail.  I just could not muster enough strength to turn those things.  In my defense, it was raining and I was standing in a swampy mixture of mud and ice, wearing shoes with no traction. It was lovely, really.  Needless to say, I was quite relieved when my prince charming arrived.  Within a few minutes, he had the job done.  We decided it was best for him to take the girls home while I finished our errand.  This should be the end of our story, but it's not.  I arrived at my destination only to find that there was no way to get to the front door.  Seriously. Even if I dared trample through the snow, there weren't any stairs to get to the door.  I walked around back...nothing. This is probably when I should have gotten back in the car and called it a day, but we really wanted that typewriter.  While I hurried to locate contact information for the seller, I heard the garage door open.  Out walked a lovely lady.  Relief.  We chatted a bit about some other vintage items she has for sale and then I was on my way.  Just kidding.  As I began to back out of the driveway, my car slid on some ice and got stuck.  Seriously?!?!?!?!  I'm pretty sure this has happened often in this ladies drive, because she came right back out with all kinds of tools and suggestions.  It took us awhile, but we managed to get me out of my second predicament of the day.  I'll surely be sending my new friend a thank you card in the mail.  She was so patient and kind and helpful.  My afternoon may not have been what I planned, but I am so grateful for the husband who came to my rescue and the generosity of a stranger.
