Still in the woods...sort of

We just got back from our 20 week anatomy ultrasound, where they spent a considerable amount of time looking at the heart to make sure there are no issues.  Thankfully, baby's heart is just fine.  That means we are part of the 97% of people who have abnormal results at the first trimester screening, but everything turns out to be fine.  Well, maybe not.

After the ultrasound tech took all the necessary measurements and gave us some adorable 3D pictures, she went to get the doctor.  We waited for quite some time and began to get nervous that we weren't going to make it home before the babysitters said they needed to leave.  Mate went out to tell them we had to get going, but couldn't find anyone.  I wiped the gel off my stomach and hunted someone down.  Just as I was explaining that we had to get home, the doctor was ready to see us.  It's a good thing we stayed because she had some news we weren't expecting (again).

It seems that the baby's kidney's have extra fluid in them.  We were told this could be reflux (the urine doesn't drain properly), a random chromosomal abnormality that they have no way of screening for, or nothing at all.  We'll go back in 8 weeks to have another look.  Until then, there is nothing to do but wait.  I'm just going to assume that we'll never really be out of the woods with this little one.  Luckily, everything else looks great, so we're going to hope for the best.

  1. Concentrate, as I no you will on that precious 3D picture. The price we pay for all the amazing innovation is often unnecessary anxiety over complications that might never arise. You are the best mother for this baby and everything will be as it should be. You've weathered darker storms!
Love and strength to you both.
