Our Kind of Weekend

Some weekends are just better than others.  I'd say, this past weekend was one of our best in a long time.  Every Friday night, Mate and I watch an episode or two of Breaking Bad.  At first, it was a little intense for me, but I was hooked pretty quickly.  We finished season four on Friday and are anxious to start the fifth and final season soon.  There are very few shows we actually both enjoy watching, so this tradition has been a nice way to start our weekend.

We relaxed most of Saturday morning and then got ready for a date.  The girls spent time with their Baba and Dida while we stopped by my mom's house, bought light bulbs, and went out to dinner.  For our anniversary, my mom gave us a gift card to the first restaurant we went to as a couple and we finally got a chance to use it.  They have remodeled since the last time we've been there, but it is still fun to go and reminisce about our 16 year old selves.  There were quite a few high school kids dressed up for Homecoming, which brought back lots of memories, too (although our dresses were never that short).
Our 2nd Homecoming
Yesterday, we installed our new light bulbs, dusted areas of the house that require Mate's height, put clean sheets on all our beds and cleaned the house.  Well, I cleaned while Mate hung out with the little ladies.

Unfortunately, the girls didn't nap for as long as we would have liked.  When they woke up, I had just sat down to relax and Mate was busy working on a lecture (in between keeping up with fantasy football). Neither of us were thrilled with the crying and whining that Mia was intent on keeping up for well over 20 minutes.  I was not about to let our nice day go downhill, so I put both the girls in the car and we went for a drive.  This gave Mate time to do what he wanted and saved me from losing my patience.  After a half an hour, we returned home to find Mate still watching the football game, so I took the girls outside to play. This was the first time since June that I took them outside by myself.  They like to run in different directions and it was just too hard to be out there alone when I didn't feel well.  I'm happy to report that the girls and I had a great time playing in the sand, on their slide, going for a walk, collecting leaves, and using sidewalk chalk.  I only had to run full speed once to save Ava from going into the street.  Luckily, we live at the back of the neighborhood so there is no traffic.

We finished our evening with arts and crafts in the basement.  I brought in some leaves from our collection to do leaf rubbings, but the girls preferred to scribble.  Mate did a great job trying to show Mia and Ava how to do it, but it was a flop.  Next, we brought out the paint brushes and let them go to town.  It really is such a messy process.  They went straight into the bath, followed by snack and bed.

While there was nothing exciting or very interesting about any of this (I'm surprised any of you are still reading), it really was exactly the kind of weekend we enjoy.  The right amount of relaxing, a little productivity, time to ourselves, quality time together, making memories with our girls . . . being a family.
