A Letter to My Daughters on Mother’s Day

 Dear Mia, Ava and Eliana,

It’s Mother’s Day, again, and I know you will do a great job thanking your Mom for all that she does for us.  She gives you the love and support you need each day.  She is a great teacher and cheerleader.  And even when she’s providing structure and discipline, she does it in the gentlest way.  There is one thing, however, you may not fully realize until you are much older:

Your Mom is the kind of person I hope you all grow up to be.  Over the years, I hope you pay attention to the ways she considers those around her.  Her selflessness is a rare thing in the world today.  I hope you listen to the way she can diffuse disagreements and take charge of a situation when it’s needed.  That kind of leadership will help you attain your wildest dreams.  Take note of her trustworthiness, honesty and generosity.  They are traits that will connect you to the world around you and help you make lasting relationships.  Pay close attention to where her priorities lie.  Having values and a vision like that will guide you in uncertain times.

These may not be lessons that get emphasized as much as “Say please,” “Listen the first time,” and “Hands are for hugging, not hitting,” but they are just as, if not more, important to glean.  Your Mom is doing a stellar job raising you kids, running our household and giving back to those around her, but she is also giving you the blueprint for how to be a good person and live a life of meaning.  I hope you will one day look back and not only be thankful for Mom’s love, but also be able to say that you have grown into women of a similar caliber.  The things your Mom can teach you will make you truly unstoppable.  Happy Mother’s Day!

Love,

Your Dad
